Edge of Collapse by Kyla Stone

This mama bird is a sucker for post-apocalyptic action. It’s the genre I love to write in and love to read. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any hurry for the world to come to some kind of cataclysmic end, but the kind of character development that comes out of these kinds of stories is my favorite. Who a character truly is, at their core, shines through when they are in a battle for survival.

And Hannah, the main character in this book, is fighting for survival on multiple fronts. First there’s the sadistic psychopath who kidnapped her and has been holding her captive for the past five years. Then there’s the fact that an EMP has made everything with a circuit board (aka, pretty much everything!) obsolete. Then there’s the freezing temperatures and brutal snow storms Michigan’s upper peninsula is known for. And then, last but not least, did I mention she’s about eight months pregnant and battling to hold onto hope that she’ll make it home to her family?

This is one of those reads that immediately pulled me in. How can you not root for Hannah? It’s the ultimate story of good vs evil and woman vs nature. Honestly, I started reading, and couldn’t stop. I had to know what would happen. I had to know that she would win.

This is the first book in a series, so there wasn’t the kind of resolution that you’d get from a stand-alone, but a few things are super clear. One, Hannah is tough as hell. And she’s not about to roll over and give up…to a world without power, or her kidnapper.

For its ability to immediately suck me into the story, immediately make me care about the main character, and for keeping me glued to the page and making me instantly download book two, this book gets a big, bold five stars from me.
